概況
南通天(tian)(tian)寧禪(chan)(chan)寺(si)(si)(si)始建于唐朝,是南通年代(dai)久,規模較大而又保(bao)存較好的一(yi)(yi)座佛教(jiao)寺(si)(si)(si)院(yuan)。它是南通江海(hai)地區現(xian)存的三(san)座唐寺(si)(si)(si)(狼山(shan)廣教(jiao)寺(si)(si)(si),如(ru)皋定慧寺(si)(si)(si),南通天(tian)(tian)寧寺(si)(si)(si))之一(yi)(yi),明《萬(wan)歷志》、清《康熙志》皆(jie)作(zuo)這(zhe)(zhe)樣的記載:“唐咸通中(zhong)僧藻煥堂建。舊名(ming)光孝(xiao)天(tian)(tian)順元年僧法(fa)恩(en)(en)奏(zou)改(gai)今名(ming)。”《乾隆志》作(zuo)了這(zhe)(zhe)樣的補充“寺(si)(si)(si)有光孝(xiao)塔五級(ji),后(hou)(hou)有毗盧閣(ge)。宋咸淳中(zhong)(約990年—1003年)君人(ren)(ren)管某(mou)建,僧法(fa)恩(en)(en)募捐。”這(zhe)(zhe)里記載“天(tian)(tian)順元年法(fa)恩(en)(en)奏(zou)改(gai)今名(ming)”有誤,應為善慧。‘管某(mou)’,難以評考,僧人(ren)(ren)曾稱為“管公,管婆(po)”,并(bing)(bing)在金剛殿(dian)供奉其像。在咸淳年間,有宋度宗兵部尚書(shu)、郡人(ren)(ren)(一(yi)(yi)說石(shi)港(gang)人(ren)(ren))印應雷舍其宅(zhai)入(ru)寺(si)(si)(si)(一(yi)(yi)記管某(mou)舍宅(zhai)入(ru)寺(si)(si)(si))。天(tian)(tian)寧寺(si)(si)(si)原系奉圣寺(si)(si)(si),居州治(zhi)之西政和間(公元1111年—1118年)遷天(tian)(tian)寧禪(chan)(chan)寺(si)(si)(si)并(bing)(bing)入(ru)報恩(en)(en)光孝(xiao),后(hou)(hou)以天(tian)(tian)寧禪(chan)(chan)寺(si)(si)(si)通稱。
歷史
對(dui)于這座(zuo)唐寺(si)(si)(si)的建(jian)(jian)(jian)(jian)年(nian),說法頗混亂,有說“明(ming)宣(xuan)德年(nian)問重建(jian)(jian)(jian)(jian)。”有說“始建(jian)(jian)(jian)(jian)于北宋(song)。”史書碑(bei)文均記(ji)載唐咸(xian)通(tong)或貞觀年(nian)間(jian)。考察(cha)這一(yi)歷(li)史時(shi)期,正是(shi)唐王朝(chao)經濟文化(hua)發(fa)(fa)展的鼎盛(sheng),佛(fo)教在(zai)江(jiang)海地(di)區的空前發(fa)(fa)展是(shi)自然的事(shi).雖(sui)然寺(si)(si)(si)院的規模遠不似后(hou)來的面貌,也應承認它是(shi)寺(si)(si)(si)廟始建(jian)(jian)(jian)(jian)的最初歷(li)史。在(zai)漫長薩(sa)歷(li)史年(nian)代,天(tian)(tian)(tian)寧(ning)(ning)寺(si)(si)(si)有過兩(liang)次(ci)興盛(sheng)的記(ji)錄(lu):一(yi)為北宋(song)政和年(nian)間(jian),經過并寺(si)(si)(si)營(ying)建(jian)(jian)(jian)(jian),使(shi)其(qi):“殿(dian)(dian)(dian)堂宏麗(li),樓(lou)閣穹崇,實一(yi)州(zhou)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)偉觀”“至咸(xian)淳(chun)間(jian),復新之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi),比舊則加焉”其(qi)時(shi),宋(song)徽宗趙佶(ji)御筆題寫“大(da)雄之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)殿(dian)(dian)(dian)”,更為其(qi)推波助潤,但到(dao)明(ming)宣(xuan)德初,天(tian)(tian)(tian)寧(ning)(ning)寺(si)(si)(si)已是(shi):‘僅存大(da)殿(dian)(dian)(dian),山門,風(feng)雨不支,像(xiang)護剝落。”后(hou)在(zai)宣(xuan)德、正統,天(tian)(tian)(tian)順、萬(wan)歷(li)、天(tian)(tian)(tian)啟(qi)年(nian)間(jian)均有興修之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)舉,天(tian)(tian)(tian)寧(ning)(ning)寺(si)(si)(si)迎(ying)來第二個中興期。重振之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)功首推通(tong)州(zhou)守御陳謙,他捐資請來杭州(zhou)凈(jing)緣(yuan)禪師(shi)(shi)主持修建(jian)(jian)(jian)(jian)事(shi)宜,前后(hou)四年(nian)整(zheng)修了(le)(le)光孝塔(ta)牙大(da)殿(dian)(dian)(dian)、山門,他還(huan)主持興建(jian)(jian)(jian)(jian)了(le)(le)園通(tong)殿(dian)(dian)(dian),輪(lun)藏殿(dian)(dian)(dian),醇零樓(lou),其(qi)徒(tu)善意(yi)又于正紀十(shi)四年(nian),天(tian)(tian)(tian)順二年(nian)兩(liang)次(ci)興工修舊補缺,鑄造(zao)銅(tong)像(xiang)。而且敕賜(si)寺(si)(si)(si)名。成為演習禮儀之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)所(suo)。”《萬(wan)歷(li)通(tong)州(zhou)志》還(huan)提到(dao)寺(si)(si)(si)有火神廟,祠山廟,毗盧(lu)(lu)閣等(deng)建(jian)(jian)(jian)(jian)筑。此外,惠儒等(deng)僧人還(huan)重建(jian)(jian)(jian)(jian)了(le)(le)禪堂,地(di)藏和彌(mi)勒殿(dian)(dian)(dian)等(deng),當時(shi)通(tong)州(zhou)名士沈明(ming)臣,盧(lu)(lu)純學,吳(wu)熠、湯有光題下(xia)“偶翼毗盧(lu)(lu)閣,遙堪(kan)俯大(da)璃(li)”等(deng)佳(jia)句,詠頌天(tian)(tian)(tian)寧(ning)(ning)寺(si)(si)(si)的一(yi)時(shi)盛(sheng)況。天(tian)(tian)(tian)寧(ning)(ning)寺(si)(si)(si)東部近代枝(zhi)學校改建(jian)(jian)(jian)(jian)為校舍(she),西側(ce)的火星殿(dian)(dian)(dian)、水神殿(dian)(dian)(dian)(禹(yu)王殿(dian)(dian)(dian)),祖師(shi)(shi)殿(dian)(dian)(dian)、大(da)意(yi)堂為晚清(qing)或民(min)國時(shi)所(suo)建(jian)(jian)(jian)(jian)。
