弘治(zhi)十(shi)三年(nian)(1500)嘗為唐寅作(zuo)《荷池(chi)消(xiao)夏圖(tu)》圖(tu)錄于《藝林月刊(kan)》八十(shi)四期。傳世作(zuo)品有《招(zhao)仙圖(tu)》卷、弘治(zhi)十(shi)四年(nian)(1501)作(zuo)《秋(qiu)林高士(shi)圖(tu)》軸(有文徵明楷書題跋)現藏故宮博物院(yuan)(yuan);《漁樂(le)圖(tu)》軸藏臺北故宮博物院(yuan)(yuan);弘治(zhi)十(shi)七年(nian)(1504)作(zuo)《織(zhi)女圖(tu)》軸藏上(shang)海博物館。
其生(sheng)平按《吳越(yue)所見書(shu)畫錄(lu)》載:“夢晉與唐六(liu)如(ru)、祝希哲同(tong)時(shi)友善,畫更(geng)高于(yu)(yu)六(liu)如(ru),死亦(yi)更(geng)早。”言張(zhang)靈(ling)死在唐寅(1470—1523)之(zhi)前。徐(xu)禎(zhen)卿(qing)《新倩籍》中有記張(zhang)靈(ling)詩文(略),極盡(jin)悲悼哀憫(min)之(zhi)情。按徐(xu)禎(zhen)卿(qing)卒(zu)于(yu)(yu)1511年,時(shi)唐寅四十二歲,而張(zhang)靈(ling)必(bi)卒(zu)于(yu)(yu)徐(xu)之(zhi)前,由此(ci)推(tui)知(zhi)張(zhang)靈(ling)生(sheng)于(yu)(yu)成化,約卒(zu)于(yu)(yu)正德初,年四十左右。

余少時,閱唐解元《六如(ru)集》有云:“六如(ru)嘗與祝枝山、張夢(meng)晉(jin),大雪中效乞兒唱《蓮花》,得錢沽酒,痛飲野寺中。曰(yue):‘此樂,惜不(bu)令太(tai)白見之。’”心竊疑焉(yan),然不(bu)知夢(meng)晉(jin)為(wei)何許人(ren)(ren)也(ye)。頃閱稗乘中,有一編曰(yue)《十(shi)美(mei)圖(tu)》,乃詳載張夢(meng)晉(jin)、崔素(su)瓊事(shi)。不(bu)覺驚(jing)喜叫跳,已而(er)潸然雨泣(qi)。此真古(gu)今來(lai)才子佳人(ren)(ren)之軼(yi)事(shi)也(ye),不(bu)可(ke)以不(bu)傳,遂(sui)為(wei)之傳。
張(zhang)夢晉,名靈(ling)(ling),蓋正(zheng)德(de)時吳縣人(ren)也。生(sheng)而(er)姿容(rong)俊(jun)爽,才調無雙(shuang),工詩善畫,性風流豪放,不(bu)(bu)可一世。家故赤貧,而(er)靈(ling)(ling)獨蚤慧。當(dang)舞(wu)勺(shao)時,父命靈(ling)(ling)出應(ying)童(tong)子試(shi)(shi),輒以(yi)冠軍補弟子員。靈(ling)(ling)心顧不(bu)(bu)樂,以(yi)為(wei)(wei)才人(ren)何苦為(wei)(wei)章縫束縛,遂絕意(yi)不(bu)(bu)欲復(fu)應(ying)試(shi)(shi)。日縱酒高吟,不(bu)(bu)肯妄交(jiao)(jiao)人(ren),人(ren)亦不(bu)(bu)敢(gan)輕交(jiao)(jiao)與。惟與唐解元六(liu)如(ru)(ru)作忘年友。靈(ling)(ling)既氏(shi),不(bu)(bu)娶。六(liu)如(ru)(ru)試(shi)(shi)叩之(zhi)(zhi)。靈(ling)(ling)笑曰:“君豈有(you)中意(yi)人(ren)足當(dang)吾(wu)偶(ou)者耶?”六(liu)如(ru)(ru)曰:“無之(zhi)(zhi)。但自(zi)古才子宜配佳人(ren),吾(wu)聊以(yi)此探君耳。”靈(ling)(ling)曰:“固然,今豈有(you)其人(ren)哉?求之(zhi)(zhi)數千年中,可當(dang)才子佳人(ren)者,惟李太白與崔(cui)鶯(ying)(ying)鶯(ying)(ying)耳。吾(wu)唯不(bu)(bu)才,然自(zi)謫仙(xian)而(er)外,似不(bu)(bu)敢(gan)多讓。若雙(shuang)文,惜下嫁鄭恒(heng),正(zheng)未(wei)知果(guo)識張(zhang)君瑞否?”六(liu)如(ru)(ru)曰:“謹受教。吾(wu)自(zi)今請為(wei)(wei)君訪(fang)之(zhi)(zhi),期得雙(shuang)文以(yi)報命,可乎?”遂大笑別去。
一(yi)(yi)日(ri),靈獨(du)坐讀《劉(liu)伶(ling)傳》,命童子(zi)(zi)進(jin)酒(jiu),屢讀屢叫絕,輒(zhe)拍(pai)案浮一(yi)(yi)大白。久之,童子(zi)(zi)跪進(jin)曰(yue)(yue):“酒(jiu)罄矣。今日(ri)唐解元與(yu)祝京兆(zhao)宴(yan)集虎丘(qiu),公(gong)何(he)不(bu)挾此編一(yi)(yi)往(wang)索醉耶?”靈大喜,即行。然不(bu)欲為(wei)不(bu)速(su)客,乃屏(ping)棄(qi)衣(yi)冠,科跣雙髻,衣(yi)鶉結,左持《劉(liu)伶(ling)傳》,右持木杖,謳吟道情詞(ci),行乞而前(qian)(qian)。抵虎丘(qiu),見(jian)(jian)貴(gui)游蟻聚,綺席(xi)喧(xuan)闐(tian)。靈每過一(yi)(yi)處,輒(zhe)執(zhi)書向客曰(yue)(yue):“劉(liu)伶(ling)告飲!”客見(jian)(jian)其(qi)美(mei)丈夫,不(bu)類丐(gai)者,競以酒(jiu)饌貽之。有數賈人(ren),方酌酒(jiu)賦(fu)詩(shi),靈至前(qian)(qian),請(qing)屬和。賈人(ren)笑之。其(qi)詩(shi)中(zhong)有蒼官、青(qing)士、撲握、伊(yi)尼四(si)事,因指(zhi)以問靈。靈曰(yue)(yue):“松竹兔鹿,誰(shui)不(bu)知耶?”賈人(ren)始駭。令康(kang)詩(shi),靈即立揮百絕而去(qu)。遙見(jian)(jian)六(liu)如及祝京兆(zhao)枝山數輩,共集可中(zhong)亭。亦趨(qu)前(qian)(qian)執(zhi)書告飲。六(liu)如早已知為(wei)靈,見(jian)(jian)其(qi)佯(yang)狂游戲(xi),戒(jie)座(zuo)客佯(yang)為(wei)不(bu)識者,以觀之。語靈曰(yue)(yue):“爾(er)丐(gai)子(zi)(zi)持書行乞,想能賦(fu)詩(shi)。試題悟石(shi)軒一(yi)(yi)絕句,如佳,即賜爾(er)卮酒(jiu);否則,當叩爾(er)脛(jing)。”靈曰(yue)(yue):“易耳。”童子(zi)(zi)遂進(jin)毫楮。靈即書云:
勝跡天成說虎丘,可(ke)中亭畔足酣游。
吟詩豈讓(rang)生公(gong)法,頑石(shi)如何不點頭。
遂并毫楮(chu)擲(zhi)(zhi)地(di)曰(yue):“佳哉!擲(zhi)(zhi)地(di)金聲也。”六(liu)如覽之(zhi),大笑。因(yin)呼(hu)與共飲(yin)。時,觀者(zhe)(zhe)(zhe)如堵,莫(mo)不(bu)相顧驚(jing)怪。靈(ling)既醉,即(ji)拂(fu)衣起,仍執(zhi)書向(xiang)悟石(shi)軒氏揖曰(yue):“劉伶謝飲(yin)!”遂不(bu)別座客徑(jing)去(qu)。六(liu)如謂枝山(shan)曰(yue):“今日(ri)(ri)我輩此(ci)(ci)舉(ju),不(bu)減晉人風流(liu)(liu),宜寫一(yi)(yi)幀,為(wei)(wei)《張(zhang)靈(ling)行乞(qi)圖》,吾任(ren)繪(hui)事,而公(gong)題跋之(zhi),亦(yi)千秋(qiu)佳話也。”即(ji)舐筆伸紙,俄頃圖成。技山(shan)題數(shu)(shu)語其(qi)后。座客爭傳玩嘆賞。忽一(yi)(yi)翁(weng)縞衣素冠,前揖曰(yue):“二(er)公(gong)即(ji)唐(tang)解元、祝(zhu)京兆耶?仆企慕有年,何幸(xing)識韓!”六(liu)如遜(xun)謝,徐叩之(zhi),則南昌(chang)明經崔文(wen)博以(yi)(yi)(yi)海(hai)虞廣文(wen)告(gao)歸(gui)者(zhe)(zhe)(zhe)也。翁(weng)得圖諦視,不(bu)忍釋手(shou)。因(yin)訊適(shi)行乞(qi)者(zhe)(zhe)(zhe)為(wei)(wei)誰。六(liu)如曰(yue):“敝里才(cai)于張(zhang)靈(ling)也。”翁(weng)曰(yue):“誠然,此(ci)(ci)固非真(zhen)才(cai)子(zi)不(bu)能。”即(ji)向(xiang)六(liu)如乞(qi)此(ci)(ci)圖歸(gui)。將返(fan)(fan)舟(zhou)(zhou)(zhou),見(jian)舟(zhou)(zhou)(zhou)已移泊他(ta)所,呼(hu)之(zhi)始(shi)至(zhi)。蓋翁(weng)有女素瓊(qiong)者(zhe)(zhe)(zhe),名瑩(ying),才(cai)貌俱(ju)絕世。以(yi)(yi)(yi)新喪母,隨翁(weng)扶櫬歸(gui)。先艤舟(zhou)(zhou)(zhou)岸側時,聞人聲喧沸,乍(zha)啟(qi)檻(jian)窺之(zhi)。則見(jian)一(yi)(yi)丐者(zhe)(zhe)(zhe),狀(zhuang)貌殊不(bu)俗。丐者(zhe)(zhe)(zhe)亦(yi)熟視檻(jian)中(zhong),忽登舟(zhou)(zhou)(zhou)長(chang)跪,自陳張(zhang)靈(ling)求見(jian),屢發遣(qian)不(bu)去(qu)。良久,有一(yi)(yi)童(tong)子(zi)入(ru)舟(zhou)(zhou)(zhou),強挽之(zhi),始(shi)去(qu)。故瑩(ying)命移舟(zhou)(zhou)(zhou)避之(zhi)。崔翁(weng)乃(nai)出圖示瑩(ying),且備(bei)述其(qi)故,瑩(ying)始(shi)知行乞(qi)者(zhe)(zhe)(zhe)為(wei)(wei)張(zhang)靈(ling)。嘆曰(yue):“此(ci)(ci)乃(nai)真(zhen)風流(liu)(liu)才(cai)子(zi)也!”取圖藏笥(si)中(zhong)。翁(weng)擬以(yi)(yi)(yi)明日(ri)(ri)往謁(ye)唐(tang)、祝(zhu)二(er)君,因(yin)訪靈(ling)。忽抱疴(ke)數(shu)(shu)日(ri)(ri)不(bu)起,為(wei)(wei)榜(bang)人所促,遽返(fan)(fan)豫章。
靈既(ji)于(yu)舟(zhou)次(ci)見(jian)瑩(ying),以為(wei)(wei)(wei)絕(jue)(jue)代佳人(ren),也(ye)(ye)(ye)難再得(de)。遂日走虎(hu)丘偵之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi),久之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)查然。屬靳(jin)人(ren)方(fang)志(zhi)來校士。志(zhi)既(ji)深惡古(gu)文(wen)詞(ci),而又聞(wen)靈跅(tuo)弛不羈(ji),竟褫其(qi)諸(zhu)生。靈聞(wen)乃(nai)大(da)喜曰(yue):“吾(wu)正苦(ku)章縫束縛,今(jin)幸(xing)免矣!顧一褫,何慮再褫;且彼能(neng)褫吾(wu)諸(zhu)生之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)名(ming),亦能(neng)褫吾(wu)才(cai)子之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)名(ming)乎?”遂往過六(liu)如家,見(jian)車騎填門,胥(xu)尉盈座。則(ze)江(jiang)右寧藩宸濠(hao)(hao)遣使來迎(ying)者也(ye)(ye)(ye)。六(liu)如擬赴(fu)其(qi)招。靈曰(yue):“甚善(shan)(shan)(shan)!吾(wu)正有厚望于(yu)君(jun)。吾(wu)曩者虎(hu)莊所遇之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)佳人(ren),即(ji)豫章人(ren)也(ye)(ye)(ye)。乞(qi)君(jun)為(wei)(wei)(wei)我多方(fang)訪之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi),冀得(de)當(dang)以報我,此開天辟地(di)第一吃(chi)緊(jin)事也(ye)(ye)(ye)。幸(xing)無忽忘。”六(liu)如曰(yue):“諾。”即(ji)偕藩使過豫章。時,宸濠(hao)(hao)久蓄異謀,其(qi)招致六(liu)如,一博好賢虛譽(yu);一慕六(liu)如詩畫兼扶(fu),欲倩其(qi)作《十(shi)(shi)美(mei)(mei)圖(tu)(tu)》,獻(xian)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)九(jiu)(jiu)重(zhong)。其(qi)時宮中已覓(mi)得(de)九(jiu)(jiu)人(ren),尚(shang)虛其(qi)一。六(liu)如請先(xian)寫之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)。遂為(wei)(wei)(wei)寫九(jiu)(jiu)美(mei)(mei),而各(ge)綴(zhui)七絕(jue)(jue)一章于(yu)后。九(jiu)(jiu)美(mei)(mei)者:廣陵(ling)湯(tang)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)靄(ai)字雨君(jun),善(shan)(shan)(shan)畫;姑蘇木桂文(wen)舟(zhou),善(shan)(shan)(shan)琴;嘉(jia)禾朱嘉(jia)淑文(wen)孺(ru),善(shan)(shan)(shan)書;金陵(ling)錢(qian)韶鳳生,善(shan)(shan)(shan)歌(ge);江(jiang)陵(ling)熊御小馮,善(shan)(shan)(shan)舞;荊(jing)溪杜若芳洲,善(shan)(shan)(shan)箏;洛陽花尊(zun)朱芳,善(shan)(shan)(shan)等;錢(qian)唐柳(liu)春陽絮才(cai),善(shan)(shan)(shan)瑟;公安薛幼(you)端(duan)端(duan)清(qing),善(shan)(shan)(shan)簫(xiao)也(ye)(ye)(ye)。圖(tu)(tu)詠既(ji)成(cheng),進之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)濠(hao)(hao),濠(hao)(hao)大(da)悅。乃(nai)盛設(she)特宴六(liu)如,而別一殿僚季生副之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)。季生者,憸人(ren)也(ye)(ye)(ye)。酒次(ci),請觀(guan)九(jiu)(jiu)美(mei)(mei)圖(tu)(tu)。因進曰(yue):“十(shi)(shi)美(mei)(mei)欠一,殊屬缺陷(xian)。某愿舉(ju)一人(ren)以充其(qi)數(shu),詰朝請持圖(tu)(tu)來獻(xian)。”比持圖(tu)(tu)以獻(xian),即(ji)崔瑩(ying)也(ye)(ye)(ye)。濠(hao)(hao)見(jian)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)曰(yue):“此真國色矣!”即(ji)屬季生往說之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)。
先是(shi),崔翁(weng)家居時,瑩(ying)才(cai)名噪甚,求姻者(zhe)踵至,翁(weng)度非瑩(ying)匹,悉拒不(bu)納。既從虎(hu)丘(qiu)得張(zhang)靈(ling),遂雅屬意(yi)(yi)靈(ling),不(bu)意(yi)(yi)疾作(zuo)遽歸。思夏往吳中,托六如主其(qi)事。適季生旋里(li)喪耦(ou),熟聞(wen)瑩(ying)名,預遣女畫師潛繪其(qi)容,而求姻于(yu)翁(weng)。翁(weng)謀(mou)諸瑩(ying),瑩(ying)固不(bu)許。于(yu)是(shi),季生銜之,因假(jia)手于(yu)濠,以(yi)泄(xie)私忿。時濠威殊(shu)張(zhang)甚,翁(weng)再三力辭(ci),不(bu)得。瑩(ying)窘激欲自裁,翁(weng)復多方(fang)護之。瑩(ying)嘆曰(yue):“命也,已(yi)矣!夫(fu)復何言!”乃取笥中《行乞圖》自題詩其(qi)上云:
才(cai)子風流第一人,愿隨行乞樂清(qing)貧。入(ru)宮祇恐(kong)無紅葉,臨別題(ti)詩當會真。
舉以授翁(weng)曰:“愿(yuan)持此復張(zhang)郎,俾知(zhi)世間(jian)有情癡女子如(ru)崔素瓊者,亦不虛(xu)其(qi)為(wei)一生才子也!”遂慟(tong)哭入宮。濠(hao)得(de)之喜甚,復倩六如(ru)圖詠,以為(wei)十美之冠。而(er)六如(ru)先已取季生所獻者,摹得(de)一紙藏之。瑩既知(zhi)六如(ru)在宮中,乘間(jian)密致一緘,以述己意(yi)(yi)。六如(ru)得(de)緘,乃大驚(jing)惋,始(shi)知(zhi)此女即靈所托訪者。“今事既不諧,復為(wei)繪圖進(jin)獻,豈非千古(gu)罪人!將(jiang)來何(he)面(mian)目見(jian)(jian)良友!”因急詣崔翁(weng),索得(de)《行乞圖》返宮,將(jiang)相(xiang)機維(wei)挽。不意(yi)(yi)十美已即日就(jiu)道,六如(ru)悔恨無已。又見(jian)(jian)濠(hao)逆(ni)跡漸著(zhu),急欲辭(ci)歸,苦為(wei)濠(hao)羈縻。乃發狂,號呼顛(dian)擲,溲(sou)穢狼藉(jie)。濠(hao)久之不能堪,仍遣(qian)使(shi)送(song)歸,杜門(men)月余乃起。過(guo)張(zhang)靈時,靈已頹然臥(wo)病矣。
蓋(gai)靈(ling)(ling)自(zi)別六(liu)(liu)如后,邑(yi)(yi)邑(yi)(yi)亡憀,日(ri)(ri)(ri)縱酒狂呼,或歌或哭。一日(ri)(ri)(ri)中(zhong)秋,獨走虎丘(qiu)千人(ren)石畔,見優伶演(yan)劇(ju),靈(ling)(ling)佇視良(liang)久(jiu),忽大(da)叫曰:“爾等所(suo)演(yan)不(bu)(bu)(bu)佳,待吾(wu)演(yan)王(wang)子晉(jin)(jin)吹笙(sheng)(sheng)跨(kua)鶴!”遂(sui)控一童(tong)子于地而跨(kua)其背,攫伶人(ren)笙(sheng)(sheng)吹之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi),命童(tong)子作(zuo)鶴飛(fei);捶之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)不(bu)(bu)(bu)起(qi),童(tong)子怒,掀靈(ling)(ling)于地。靈(ling)(ling)起(qi)曰:“鶴不(bu)(bu)(bu)肯飛(fei),吾(wu)今既不(bu)(bu)(bu)得為天仙,惟當作(zuo)水中(zhong)仙耳!”遂(sui)躍入劍池中(zhong)。眾(zhong)急(ji)救之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)出(chu),則(ze)面額(e)俱損,且傷(shang)股不(bu)(bu)(bu)能行,人(ren)送(song)其歸家。自(zi)此委頓(dun)枕席,日(ri)(ri)(ri)日(ri)(ri)(ri)在(zai)醉夢中(zhong)。至是,忽聞(wen)(wen)六(liu)(liu)如至,乃(nai)從榻(ta)間(jian)(jian)躍起(qi),急(ji)叩豫章(zhang)佳人(ren)狀(zhuang)。六(liu)(liu)如出(chu)所(suo)摹(mo)素瓊圖示(shi)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)。靈(ling)(ling)一見,詫為天人(ren),急(ji)捧置案(an)問,頂(ding)禮跪拜,自(zi)陳“才子張靈(ling)(ling)拜謁”云云。已,聞(wen)(wen)瑩(ying)已入宮,乃(nai)撫圖痛(tong)哭。六(liu)(liu)如復出(chu)瑩(ying)所(suo)題《行乞(qi)圖》示(shi)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)。靈(ling)(ling)讀罷,益痛(tong)哭。大(da)呼:“佳人(ren)崔(cui)素瓊!”隨蹄(ti)地嘔血不(bu)(bu)(bu)止(zhi)。家人(ren)擁至榻(ta)間(jian)(jian),病愈甚。三日(ri)(ri)(ri)后,邀六(liu)(liu)如與訣(jue)曰:“已矣!唐君!吾(wu)今真死矣!死后,乞(qi)以(yi)此圖殉(xun)葬。”索(suo)筆(bi)書片紙云:“張靈(ling)(ling),字(zi)夢晉(jin)(jin),風(feng)流放誕人(ren)也,以(yi)情死。”遂(sui)擲筆(bi)而逝。六(liu)(liu)如哭之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)慟,乃(nai)葬靈(ling)(ling)于玄墓山(shan)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)麓(lu),而以(yi)圖殉(xun)焉。檢其生平(ping)文章(zhang),先已自(zi)焚,惟收其詩草及《行乞(qi)圖》以(yi)歸。
時(shi),瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)已率(lv)十美抵(di)都。因駕幸榆(yu)林,久(jiu)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)未(wei)得(de)進御(yu)。而(er)宸濠已舉兵反,為(wei)王(wang)守仁(ren)所(suo)(suo)敗,旋即(ji)就擒。駕還時(shi),以十美為(wei)逆藩(fan)所(suo)(suo)獻,悉遣歸母家,聽其適人(ren)。于是瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)仍得(de)返豫章(zhang)。值崔(cui)(cui)翁已捐館舍,有老仆崔(cui)(cui)恩(en)殯之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)。瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)哀(ai)痛至甚。然煢(qiong)孑無(wu)依,葬(zang)父已畢,遂(sui)(sui)挈裝徑抵(di)吳門(men),命崔(cui)(cui)恩(en)邀六(liu)(liu)(liu)(liu)(liu)如相見于舟次。瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)首訊張(zhang)靈(ling)(ling)(ling)近(jin)狀,六(liu)(liu)(liu)(liu)(liu)如愴然收(shou)涕曰(yue):“辱(ru)姊(zi)鍾情遠顧,奈(nai)此(ci)君福薄,今已為(wei)情鬼矣(yi)!”瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)聞(wen)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi),嗚咽失聲。詢知(zhi)靈(ling)(ling)(ling)葬(zang)于玄墓(mu)(mu),約明(ming)日(ri)(ri)同往祭(ji)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)。六(liu)(liu)(liu)(liu)(liu)如明(ming)日(ri)(ri)果(guo)攜靈(ling)(ling)(ling)詩(shi)草及(ji)(ji)《行(xing)藝圖(tu)》至,與(yu)(yu)瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)各(ge)橈舟抵(di)靈(ling)(ling)(ling)墓(mu)(mu)所(suo)(suo),瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)衣輒酹,伏地拜(bai)哭(ku)甚哀(ai)。已乃懸《行(xing)乞圖(tu)》于墓(mu)(mu)前,陳設祭(ji)儀,坐石臺上,徐取(qu)(qu)靈(ling)(ling)(ling)詩(shi)草讀之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)。每讀一(yi)(yi)章(zhang),輒酹酒(jiu)一(yi)(yi)卮,大呼(hu):“張(zhang)靈(ling)(ling)(ling)才(cai)子(zi)!”一(yi)(yi)呼(hu)一(yi)(yi)哭(ku),哭(ku)罷(ba)又讀,往復不(bu)休。六(liu)(liu)(liu)(liu)(liu)如不(bu)忍(ren)聞(wen),掩淚歸舟。而(er)崔(cui)(cui)恩(en)佇立已久(jiu),勸慰無(wu)從,亦起去,徘徊(huai)丘垅間。及(ji)(ji)返,則瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)已自(zi)縊于臺畔。恩(en)大驚,走告(gao)六(liu)(liu)(liu)(liu)(liu)如。六(liu)(liu)(liu)(liu)(liu)如趁(chen)視,見瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)已死(si)。嘆息跪拜(bai)曰(yue):“大難!大難!我唐寅今日(ri)(ri)得(de)見奇(qi)人(ren)奇(qi)事矣(yi)!”遂(sui)(sui)具棺(guan)衾,將(jiang)易服(fu)斂之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)。而(er)瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)通體衫襦皆細綴(zhui)嚴密無(wu)少隙(xi),知(zhi)其矢死(si)已久(jiu)。六(liu)(liu)(liu)(liu)(liu)如因取(qu)(qu)詩(shi)草及(ji)(ji)《行(xing)乞圖(tu)》,并(bing)置棺(guan)中為(wei)殉,啟(qi)靈(ling)(ling)(ling)擴與(yu)(yu)瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)同穴。而(er)植碑題其上云:“明(ming)才(cai)子(zi)張(zhang)夢晉、佳人(ren)崔(cui)(cui)素(su)瓊合葬(zang)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)墓(mu)(mu)”。時(shi),傾(qing)城(cheng)士人(ren)哄傳感嘆,無(wu)貴(gui)賤賢愚,爭來吊誄,絡繹(yi)喧(xuan)豗(hui),云蒸雨集(ji),哀(ai)聲動地,殆莫知(zhi)其由也。六(liu)(liu)(liu)(liu)(liu)如既合葬(zang)靈(ling)(ling)(ling)、瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying),檢瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)所(suo)(suo)遺囊中裝,為(wei)置墓(mu)(mu)田(tian),營丙(bing)舍,命崔(cui)(cui)恩(en)居(ju)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi),以供春秋奠(dian)掃之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)役。嗚呼(hu)!才(cai)子(zi)佳人(ren),一(yi)(yi)旦至此(ci)。庶乎靈(ling)(ling)(ling)、瑩(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)(ying)之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)事畢,而(er)六(liu)(liu)(liu)(liu)(liu)如之(zhi)(zhi)(zhi)事亦畢矣(yi)。
而六(liu)如(ru)于明(ming)年仲春(chun),躬詣墓所拜(bai)奠(dian)。夜宿丙舍旁,輾轉不寐,啟窗縱目,則(ze)萬樹梅花(hua),一(yi)天明(ming)月,不知身在人(ren)(ren)世。六(liu)如(ru)悵然(ran)(ran)嘆曰(yue):“夢晉一(yi)生狂放、淪落不偶,今(jin)得(de)(de)與崔(cui)美(mei)人(ren)(ren)合(he)葬此(ci)間,消受香光(guang),亦差可不負矣!但將未知誰(shui)葬我唐寅(yin)耳(er)!”不覺(jue)欷歔泣下。忽遙(yao)聞(wen)有(you)人(ren)(ren)朗吟云:“花(hua)滿山中高士臥,月明(ming)林下美(mei)人(ren)(ren)來(lai)。”六(liu)如(ru)急起入林迎揖(yi),則(ze)張(zhang)靈也(ye)。六(liu)如(ru)訝曰(yue):“君死已久,安(an)得(de)(de)來(lai)此(ci)吟高季迪詩?”靈笑曰(yue):“君以為我真(zhen)死耶?死者形,不死者性,吾既為一(yi)世才(cai)子,死后豈若他人(ren)(ren)泯沒(mei)耶?今(jin)乘此(ci)花(hua)滿山中,高士偃臥時來(lai)造(zao)訪耳(er)。”復舉手前(qian)指(zhi)曰(yue):“此(ci)非‘月明(ming)林下美(mei)人(ren)(ren)來(lai)’乎?”六(liu)如(ru)回顧(gu),有(you)美(mei)人(ren)(ren)姍(shan)姍(shan)來(lai)前(qian),則(ze)崔(cui)瑩也(ye)。于是,兩人(ren)(ren)攜手整襟,向六(liu)如(ru)拜(bai)謝合(he)葬之德。六(liu)如(ru)方(fang)扶掖之,忽又有(you)人(ren)(ren)大(da)呼曰(yue):“我高季迪梅花(hua)詩,乃(nai)千古(gu)絕唱,何物張(zhang)靈,妄(wang)稱(cheng)才(cai)子,改‘雪’為‘花(hua)’,定須飽我老拳!”六(liu)如(ru)轉瞬之間,靈、瑩俱失所在。其人(ren)(ren)直前(qian)呼曰(yue):“當捶此(ci)改詩之賊才(cai)子!”捽六(liu)如(ru)欲毆之,六(liu)如(ru)驚寤。則(ze)半(ban)窗明(ming)月,闃其無人(ren)(ren)。六(liu)如(ru)憮(wu)然(ran)(ran),始信真(zhen)才(cai)子與真(zhen)佳(jia)人(ren)(ren),蓋(gai)死而不死也(ye)。因匡坐梅窗下,作《張(zhang)靈崔(cui)瑩合(he)傳》以紀(ji)其事。然(ran)(ran)今(jin)日《六(liu)如(ru)集(ji)》中,固未嘗(chang)見此(ci)傳也(ye)。余又安(an)得(de)(de)而不亟補之哉。
畸史氏曰(yue):嗟(jie)乎(hu)!蓋吾閱《十(shi)美圖編(bian)》,而后(hou)知世間真(zhen)有(you)才子(zi)佳人(ren)(ren)(ren)也(ye)。從(cong)(cong)來稗官家言,大抵真(zhen)贗參半。若夢(meng)(meng)(meng)晉(jin)之(zhi)名,既章(zhang)章(zhang)于(yu)《六(liu)如(ru)集》中,但素(su)(su)瓊之(zhi)事(shi),無從(cong)(cong)考(kao)證。雖(sui)然,有(you)其(qi)(qi)事(shi)何必無其(qi)(qi)人(ren)(ren)(ren),且安(an)知非作者(zhe)有(you)為而發乎(hu)?獨怪夢(meng)(meng)(meng)晉(jin)之(zhi)才,目空千古(gu),而其(qi)(qi)尚論才子(zi)佳人(ren)(ren)(ren),則專以(yi)太(tai)白與鶯鶯當(dang)之(zhi)。夫太(tai)白誠(cheng)天上仙(xian)才,不可有(you)二。若千古(gu)佳人(ren)(ren)(ren),自當(dang)以(yi)文(wen)君為第一(yi)(yi)。而夢(meng)(meng)(meng)晉(jin)顧舍(she)彼(bi)取此,厥(jue)后(hou),果遇素(su)(su)瓊,毋乃思崔(cui)得崔(cui),適(shi)符其(qi)(qi)讖耶?至于(yu)張以(yi)情(qing)死,崔(cui)以(yi)情(qing)殉,初非有(you)一(yi)(yi)詞半縷之(zhi)成約,而慷慨從(cong)(cong)容,等泰山(shan)于(yu)鴻(hong)毛(mao),徒以(yi)才色相(xiang)憐之(zhi)故。推此志(zhi)也(ye),凜(lin)凜(lin)生(sheng)氣,日月(yue)爭光,又(you)遠(yuan)出(chu)琴心犢鼻之(zhi)上矣。而或(huo)者(zhe)猶追恨于(yu)夢(meng)(meng)(meng)晉(jin)之(zhi)早(zao)死。以(yi)為夢(meng)(meng)(meng)晉(jin)若不死,則素(su)(su)瓊遣歸之(zhi)日,正崔(cui)張好合(he)之(zhi)年,后(hou)此或(huo)白頭唱和,蘭(lan)玉(yu)盈階,未可知也(ye)。噫!此固庸庸蚩蚩者(zhe)之(zhi)厚福也(ye),何有(you)于(yu)才子(zi)佳人(ren)(ren)(ren)哉!
張靈(ling)(ling)(ling)(ling)本(ben)窶人(ren)子(zi)(zi)(zi),力作(zuo)自(zi)給,而靈(ling)(ling)(ling)(ling)生乃有爽氣(qi),嗜酒醉則作(zuo)狂曰:“日休,小(xiao)豎子(zi)(zi)(zi)耳,尚能(neng)稱醉士(shi)(shi),我獨不(bu)能(neng)醉耶!”所與游(you)者,吳趨、唐(tang)寅(yin)最善,寅(yin)嘗擬(ni)游(you)武丘,召靈(ling)(ling)(ling)(ling)與俱往,促之(zhi),尚臥(wo),寅(yin)抵寢所呼曰:“日高舂矣,睡何為(wei)(wei)?”靈(ling)(ling)(ling)(ling)覺,怒(nu)曰:“今者無酒,雅懷殊不(bu)啟(qi)。方入(ru)醉鄉,又(you)為(wei)(wei)相攪(jiao)。”寅(yin)曰:“所以來,固(gu)欲邀子(zi)(zi)(zi)。”靈(ling)(ling)(ling)(ling)喜,加衣起,遂與寅(yin)上舟扣(kou)舷痛(tong)飲,作(zuo)《野人(ren)歌》。會數賈(jia)飲于可中亭,且詠(yong)詩(shi),因更(geng)衣為(wei)(wei)丐者上,賈(jia)與食啖之(zhi),靈(ling)(ling)(ling)(ling)請(qing)續和(he)。時賈(jia)所為(wei)(wei)詩(shi)有“蒼(cang)官”、“青(qing)士(shi)(shi)”、“撲(pu)握”,“伊尼(ni)”諸詞,因以問靈(ling)(ling)(ling)(ling),靈(ling)(ling)(ling)(ling)曰:“蒼(cang)官,松也;青(qing)士(shi)(shi),竹也;撲(pu)握,免(mian)也;伊尼(ni),鹿也。”賈(jia)始駭(hai)令(ling)賡,靈(ling)(ling)(ling)(ling)即揮毫(hao)不(bu)已,凡(fan)百絕。抵舟,命童(tong)子(zi)(zi)(zi)易維蘿陰下令(ling)跡絕。賈(jia)使人(ren)察(cha)之(zhi),不(bu)見也。皆以為(wei)(wei)神仙。賈(jia)去,復上亭,朱衣金目,作(zuo)胡人(ren)舞(wu)形狀,殊絕。
祝(zhu)允(yun)明嘗偕陸(lu)濟民、張(zhang)夢(meng)晉、韓(han)壽(shou)椿(chun)登虎丘浮屠。登至(zhi)絕頂(ding),但見八荒洞(dong)然,萬籟齊(qi)發,飲酒樂(le)甚。壽(shou)椿(chun)出紙筆賦詩(shi)以紀(ji)其(qi)游,允(yun)明詩(shi)先成,云(yun)(yun):“草(cao)(cao)木衣(yi)裳(shang)下,煙霞掌(zhang)握(wo)中。偶然飛(fei)咳唾,珠玉(yu)滿天(tian)風(feng)。”濟民云(yun)(yun):“極(ji)目飛(fei)鴻小,致(zhi)身云(yun)(yun)路中。詩(shi)人(ren)少(shao)知(zhi)(zhi)己,發付與東風(feng)。”夢(meng)晉云(yun)(yun):“慮遣塵寰外,天(tian)歸(gui)眼界中。新詩(shi)三百(bai)首,句(ju)句(ju)答松風(feng)。”壽(shou)椿(chun)云(yun)(yun):“詩(shi)寄千峰抄(chao),春橫一鏡(jing)中。攜(xie)壺兼荷鐘,不減晉人(ren)風(feng)。”詩(shi)成閣(ge)筆,天(tian)風(feng)颯然飄其(qi)詩(shi)草(cao)(cao),盤旋直上太(tai)虛,如神(shen)物掀舞。將擲地,又為(wei)蒼鷹所舉,竟(jing)不知(zhi)(zhi)其(qi)所止。遂名為(wei)“飛(fei)詩(shi)會(hui)。”
初,張靈(ling)(ling)與唐寅俱為(wei)郡學(xue)生(sheng),博古(gu)相尚(shang)。適鄞人方志來督學(xue),惡(e)古(gu)文詞(ci),察知寅,欲中傷之(zhi),靈(ling)(ling)挹郁不(bu)自遣。寅曰:“子未為(wei)所知,何愁之(zhi)甚?”靈(ling)(ling)曰:“獨不(bu)聞龍王欲斬有(you)尾族,蝦蟆亦哭(ku)乎?”后靈(ling)(ling)果為(wei)所斥罷(ba),或謂之(zhi)曰:“以子之(zhi)才,顧不(bu)得(de)激致青云,乃重遭顯棄,豈無雉經之(zhi)用,而何以立于世?”靈(ling)(ling)曰:“昔謝豹化為(wei)蟲(chong),行地中,以足覆面作忍恥狀。吏(li)靈(ling)(ling)用子言(yan),亦當如是矣。縱不(bu)爾,亦安(an)得(de)更(geng)銜鑿落耶(ye)!”靈(ling)(ling)臨終前三日(ri)(ri)作詩云:“一(yi)枚蟬蛻榻當中,命(ming)也(ye)難辭付大(da)空。垂死尚(shang)思(si)玄墓麓,滿山(shan)寒雪一(yi)林松(song)。”后一(yi)日(ri)(ri)又(you)作詩云:“彷佛飛(fei)魂亂哭(ku)聲,多情于此轉多情。欲將(jiang)眾(zhong)淚(lei)澆(jiao)心(xin)火,何日(ri)(ri)張家再托(tuo)生(sheng)?”聞者莫不(bu)悲之(zhi)。
