據《舊唐書·禮儀志四》記載,武則天垂拱四年(688年),雍卅永安人唐同泰偽造瑞石于洛水,獻給武則天。其文曰:圣母臨人,永昌帝業。武則天加封洛水之神,又因為嵩山和洛水相距很近,又封嵩山為神岳,封嵩山山神為中天王,在五岳中率先得到帝王封祀,中岳大帝是五岳中信仰起源最早的神。
五岳大帝是指東岳大帝、南岳大帝、西岳大帝、北岳大帝、中岳大帝。
主治土地山川陵谷,山林樹木之屬,兼管牛羊稻谷等。按(an)五行觀念,中(zhong)(zhong)央屬(shu)土,故道教認為中(zhong)(zhong)岳為五土之主,強調太上常(chang)用三天真人有德望者居中(zhong)(zhong)岳神君之位。

中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)岳(yue)廟(miao)前身(shen)是(shi)太室祠,最遲在(zai)西漢漢武帝時已經存(cun)(cun)在(zai),原(yuan)為(wei)(wei)祭祀(si)嵩山(shan)太室山(shan)神(shen)的(de)場所,隨著祭祀(si)山(shan)岳(yue)制度的(de)消失,中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)岳(yue)廟(miao)后來(lai)成(cheng)為(wei)(wei)道教的(de)活動場所,但仍保(bao)留著禮制建(jian)(jian)筑的(de)特點(dian)。中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)岳(yue)廟(miao)是(shi)五(wu)(wu)岳(yue)中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)保(bao)存(cun)(cun)最完(wan)整、規模最大(da)的(de)建(jian)(jian)筑群(qun),基本(ben)上保(bao)留了清代(dai)(dai)重修(xiu)以后的(de)規制。廟(miao)中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)有殿(dian)(dian)、宮(gong)、樓、閣等建(jian)(jian)筑39座近(jin)400間。總面積近(jin)11萬平方(fang)米(mi),中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)軸(zhou)線全長650米(mi),共有7進11層(ceng)建(jian)(jian)筑,中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)軸(zhou)線上的(de)建(jian)(jian)筑高大(da)雄偉(wei),主殿(dian)(dian)峻極殿(dian)(dian)是(shi)五(wu)(wu)岳(yue)中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)最大(da)的(de)殿(dian)(dian)宇。中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)軸(zhou)線兩側分布(bu)有古(gu)神(shen)庫(ku)、四岳(yue)殿(dian)(dian)、東西廊房、火神(shen)宮(gong)、祖師(shi)宮(gong)等多(duo)組院落,是(shi)道士分別(bie)舉行祀(si)典和(he)(he)生活的(de)地方(fang)。廟(miao)內還有古(gu)代(dai)(dai)碑刻(ke)73品(pin),漢代(dai)(dai)至清代(dai)(dai)的(de)古(gu)柏330多(duo)棵。完(wan)整的(de)建(jian)(jian)筑布(bu)局(ju)使(shi)中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)岳(yue)廟(miao)成(cheng)為(wei)(wei)一座主次(ci)分明、錯落有致、布(bu)局(ju)緊湊、色調和(he)(he)諧的(de)龐大(da)建(jian)(jian)筑群(qun)。2001年(nian),中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)岳(yue)廟(miao)被(bei)國務院公布(bu)為(wei)(wei)第五(wu)(wu)批全國重點(dian)文物(wu)保(bao)護單(dan)位(wei)。中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)岳(yue)大(da)殿(dian)(dian)是(shi)中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)岳(yue)廟(miao)規模最大(da)的(de)主體建(jian)(jian)筑,又稱峻極殿(dian)(dian)。殿(dian)(dian)內正(zheng)座為(wei)(wei)五(wu)(wu)米(mi)高的(de)塑(su)像(xiang)即中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)岳(yue)大(da)帝,經歷(li)代(dai)(dai)帝王加封為(wei)(wei)“祟圣(sheng)大(da)帝天中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)王”。塑(su)像(xiang)兩邊有使(shi)臣侍者和(he)(he)鎮殿(dian)(dian)將軍方(fang)弼、方(fang)相塑(su)像(xiang),高七米(mi),執斧荷鉞(yue),威(wei)風凜(lin)凜(lin)。千百年(nian)來(lai),中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)岳(yue)廟(miao)香火旺盛,前來(lai)祈福的(de)人絡繹(yi)不絕(jue)。
